In an intimate setting at Melbourne’s Gasworks Theatre, just a stone’s throw from the coastline of Albert Park, Scimm Dance Company dazzles audiences with their 2024 rendition of ‘Paracosm,’ a captivating work as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival.
This production features a remarkable ensemble of 10 professional dancers, each showcasing acrobatic flair and artistry. ‘Paracosm’ delves into the intricacies of the imaginary worlds within our minds, using visual imagery as a catalyst to convey the brain’s inner workings. Paracosm’ (meaning: a prolonged fantasy world invented by children) is a 60-minute work that masterfully explores the corners of creative licence, bringing to life the intricate imaginary worlds we crafted as children. These realms, complete with their own geography, history, and language, offer a captivating escape from reality, vividly expressed through a harmonious blend of dance, sound, lighting, and visual art.
Standout moments in the performance include Eden Kew’s awe-inspiring acrobatics, where they seem to defy gravity with breathtaking moves. This is beautifully juxtaposed by senior artist Bailey Glen’s deep expression and exquisite flexibility during a solo moment, showcasing the profound emotional range of the ensemble.
